MemorySPEX® is inspired by a growing body of neuroscience exploring how precisely timed sensory stimulation may influence the brain’s natural activity.

Researchers at MIT and other leading institutions have studied sensory stimulation at 40 Hz, the frequency associated with gamma brain-wave activity. Gamma oscillations are involved in attention, memory, learning and communication between different regions of the brain.

Why 40 Hz?

Brain cells communicate through electrical rhythms. Gamma oscillations are among the brain’s fastest rhythms and play an important role in coordinating activity across regions involved in cognition.

Published research has found that 40 Hz visual stimulation can entrain, or synchronize, gamma activity beyond the visual cortex and into higher-order regions of the brain. In preclinical studies, researchers have also observed effects involving neuronal and synaptic protection, microglial activity and neuroinflammation.

Early human studies are continuing to investigate the potential effects of 40 Hz sensory stimulation on sleep, cognition and brain health.
